Commercial Banking Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I loved all of the training and learning opportunities that were made available to interns. I got to travel to the new Plano campus and the Chicago office to meet interns from all over the nation. I also enjoyed all of the assignments that interns were given, some team based, some individual. All of the higher ups were also always excited to answer questions and give advice.

What I wish was different

I wish there were a few more opportunities to work with other departments to see other sides of the business.

Advice

Ask questions! Never feel like you are asking a dumb question because all of the higher ups love when interns display curiosity and willingness to learn.

Investment Banking Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

J.P. Morgan investment banking is an inspiring environment for people who love to learn. A lot of new information was thrown at me the first few days on the desk, but I had co-workers and mentors who were engaged, enthusiastic teachers. Also, interns here are given a lot of responsibility - we are not just printing things out or getting coffee. We are actually running analyses, writing important content, and generally utilizing both technical and communication skills day in and day out. Essentially, I really enjoyed the challenge.

What I wish was different

Though this would not have been feasible due to the steep learning curve interns face, I would have liked to be busier during all hours actually spent in the office. There was a bit of down time here and there, when no one needed help on anything in particular, but I was able to fill the gaps by flipping through prior projects or reading the WSJ.

Advice

I would advise people to pursue this internship! Start networking now (reach out to me if you want!), and learn as much as you can about investment banking. It's ok if you don't know technical skills - those can be taught. What you must have is a true passion for the job and a mastery of the soft skills (curiosity, good work ethic, attention to detail).

Commercial Banking Intern

What I liked

Very supportive company for developing Black talent, great resources and connections, great culture of encouraging coffee chats, great exposure to fun career opportunities.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more feedback for when you are doing well and more guaranteed client calls. I also love the idea of sophomores getting returns for full time, since I was the only sophomore and another year of the same thing feels as if I am missing out on some gained experiences.

Advice

Actively seek out connections, communicate, seek feedback, work with people, and clearly express your goals. Communicate what you are doing and try to ask questions that make you positively remembered when given the chance.

Business Management and Global Finance

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

There were events run y the program that were great for networking and for fun. They did many info sessions with us and were heavily focused on us learning and knowing what we're doing and understanding our role. The team I worked with very friendly and open to helping interns.

What I wish was different

Not much more I'd like to be different, probably more involvement in projects from the start or more of a say in what role you're placed in before the internship starts.

Advice

Ask questions, all interns are thoroughly involved to do so. Don't be afraid to speak up either, interns there aren't just shadows,
